February 17th, 2019, was our 220th night in the Coffee House. Our little Sonic Lite travel trailer had been as far south as San Diego and was now on the move back north to Vancouver Island.
Read MoreAt the end of February 2019, we made a huge decision. THE decision. The east coast would be our next home.
Read MoreThis was our last week in Morro Bay, California, and our last sunset on a beach during the return trip home to Canada. It made perfect sense to me that the primary setting for Pixar’s 2016 film Finding Dory was set in Morro Bay. Dory sets out to find her family. We were doing the same, searching for support from family and friends.
Read MoreCalifornians have a different perspective about merge lane speeds than we have in Canada. We were cut off a few times because the vehicles merging slowed down instead of speeding up to enter the flow of traffic on the freeway. When you’re 40 feet of truck and trailer, this is disconcerting.
Read MoreWe felt we had walked a lot in Napa Valley. Once we settled into The Delta Ocean Pointe Resort in Victoria, BC, we pushed our step count over 90,000 for the week. Walking back and forth between downtown Victoria and our daughter’s apartment 4 kilometres away made the activity add up in a fun way.
Read MoreThis is where I started feeling everything I needed was ahead of me. We were a week away from flying to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The home we wanted, the businesses we were building, everything was there, out east, waiting for us.
Read MoreWe were flying out the next day to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The walk to the pub allowed us to see another side of the Victoria Inner Harbour. There was activity happening all around us, but we were preparing for the long travel day ahead.
Read MoreAfter looking at so many older homes and seeing how much money we would be sinking into crumbling foundations, we looked again at a well-maintained home in Pictou, Nova Scotia. We made an offer on the house on April 8th, 2019.
Read MoreWe figured the best deals at the grocery store were the sandwiches expiring that day. We ate lunch and dinner for under $15 total. We did this the last few days in Halifax to stretch our already stretched food budget.
Read MoreOur travel trailer was cluttered. Our truck was cluttered. We didn’t know where to put anything when we moved back into the Coffee House.
Read MoreWhen we came back from Halifax, NS, and stared into our storage unit, everything stacked in front of us was built on decisions we made a year before. For six months after we left Vancouver Island, we thought the items in storage would be for the life we wanted in Northern BC. Then, we decided on the east coast.
Read MoreJamie has been across Canada a few different ways. Planes, train, and by automobile. I had never traveled further than the prairies by car.
Read MoreWe’ve done this sort of thing before. We went on holiday with no reservations and no plans other than to eat at as many In-N-Out Burger locations as we could (for Jamie’s 50th birthday). We’ve moved to a different province and started over with a new home and new jobs at least four times.
Read MoreIt was October 1st. We had a reservation at an RV park just outside Kennewick, WA. We had packed the night before and were ready to pull out of Osoyoos by 8:15 am.
Read MoreWith no plans to leave Vegas, we tried to settle in. We celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving by going to an outlet mall to get new walking shoes for Jamie, ending the day with barbeque pork chops and Betty Crocker Double Chocolate Brownie Mug Treats. Not at all a traditional day of thanks, but Mug Treats in the microwave were memorable!
Read MoreBesides the spiders and snakes and goats, there were also birds and bunnies. Black Canyon City was quite a change from Las Vegas.
Read MoreMore flash flood warnings arrived on my phone. That night, October 24th, 2018, there was thunder, lightning, rain, and hail. The storm didn’t last long, and the heat of the desert the next day quickly removed all evidence of the rain.
Read MoreBeside the RV park where we were staying, there was a field inside a gated area. A simple track had been laid out for dirt bikes and ATVs, but we knew dogs were being walked in there. We decided to explore.
Read MoreBefore we had our daughter, who is now 25, Sundays were spent at home tuned to the distinct sound of stock cars circling a track. That’s when I caught up on my chores, and Jamie watched NASCAR on TV. We always joked that Sundays were spent at the Church of NASCAR.
Read MoreWe pulled out by 8:15 am. Our gas stop and lunch break in Tacna, AZ, was quick and easy. We saw a number of Volkswagen Vans and a Karmann Ghia parked at the restaurant beside the gas station.
